Artist Statement
My work integrates media, imagery and topical approaches with debates around femininity. This bold work is sometimes provocative, dark or exhibits subtle humour which underscores its underlying message.
The ‘Real Women Series’ brings discourse in feminine identity into the 21st century with screen printed images of underwear, shaped by the wearer’s absent body. These were real women and not airbrushed models and one can search for these persons within the images themselves. Commercial advertising trickery has been abandoned.
Other works allude to notions of femininity in referencing Victorian feminine ideals with the use and strong presence of stitch work and stitching which provide a link to craft and ideas surrounding ‘women’s work’.
